We empower neurodivergent students to become lifelong learners.

Our personalized curriculum and 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio has yielded successful transitions to traditional high school and beyond for over 500 students since 2008.

Our curriculum is based on Common Core State Standards and further customized to fit the needs of neurodiverse and twice-exceptional (2e) learners. Students learn the same Common Core skills, but in a way they can master.

Our elementary and middle school programs encompass math, reading, writing, humanities, science, Spanish, music, art, and physical education for all ages and types of learners.

CURRICULUM

Our program is a rich blend of curriculum designed to build a wide range of skills.

Students dive into historical and cultural literature, text, and historical fiction to learn how to analyze historical and current events and their worldwide impact. Through these entry points, they learn about environment, cultures, and perspectives. Class discussions and activities further enhance their understanding of plot, setting, and character development and build key literary analysis skills.

We reinforce the writing process at every grade level to build key foundational skills for neurodiverse learners: organizing ideas and mastering sentence structure, grammar, and self-editing. Students sharpen their grammar, vocabulary, and spelling skills year-round. They also practice thesis-based writing to develop their own voice and substantiate their point of view.

Research is an important part of the curriculum. Through research projects, students work at increasing levels of independence. They learn how to negotiate a variety of source materials, how to assess the reliability and value of sources, and how to cite sources.

Creative writing is also an important facet of our program. Throughout the year, students flex their creative skills in the form of student-authored stories, plays, and poetry.

ENRICHMENT

Art

Learning about art goes beyond the excitement of watching students create original works or viewing artwork by the masters. The arts teach students to convey ideas, feelings, and emotions, as well as sharpen their ability to critique and analyze. In our arts program, we encourage students to ask questions, think, and learn as they create.

Physical education/Action breaks

Our physical education program teaches students that living healthfully is a lifelong skill. At McKinna, we take daily action breaks to encourage movement and provide fun, creative ways for students to stay engaged. Students participate in a variety of activities, including yoga, martial arts, nontraditional sports, and games. They hone their athletic skills through traditional sports to develop their coordination, including throwing, kicking, and catching.

Outdoor education

Our outdoor education program follows the philosophy that nature is not only a place of beauty to be admired, respected, and protected, but is also a place that fosters personal growth and development. Students learn about the opportunities nature provides through such activities as hiking and beach walking in our beautiful Malibu location.
